Founded in 1981 by the Italian architect Ettore Sottsass, the Memphis group brings together a dozen international members, architects, designers, draftsmen and writers determined to deconstruct existing design and artistic movements and open up the field of possibilities. Geometric patterns mixed with electric colors, deconstructed shapes and assemblages of new and classic materials revisited such as plastic laminate, marble, glass, tubes, industrial materials, etc. the freedom to create was at the heart of the design movement which ended in 1988.
Furniture, tableware and lighting, the Memphis Milano group introduces patterns and bright colours into the world of architecture and decoration, essential in the creative process. Colour being the very essence of the object, it does not intervene in the final choice but from its creation: it delivers a message in its association with the materials and shapes used.
"In Memphis there is no dominant color or background color" said Michele De Lucchi, a member of the group: creative freedom is limitless.
Some of the furniture presented at the first exhibition in 1981 has become true cult objects, created by the members of the Memphis group, radical and subversive, with the aim of changing the codes of international design, with Bob Dylan in the background.
Today, some authentic pieces from the Memphis movement, the group having strongly influenced all decoration since, are highly sought after and can reach high prices. Memphis Milano still produces, today, a selection of historical pieces from their catalog.
Club Barbara offers you several vintage pieces influenced by the Memphis Milano movement of the 80s, some of which are signed.
