70s Sicilian ceramic majolica prickly pear coffee set

This coffee set embodies the generous aesthetic emblematic of 1970s Sicilian ceramics, a period during which island workshops reinterpreted Mediterranean symbols using polychrome slipware. The prickly pear, an iconic Sicilian plant, is rendered here as a decorative motif of great finesse, with a very graphic, almost sculpted finish.
Made of slipware ceramic, this set is part of a particularly active artisanal tradition in Sicily from the 1960s onwards, especially around Caltagirone and Santo Stefano di Camastra. The slipware technique allows for free and vibrant modeling, accentuated by nuanced glazes punctuated with black. These sets were designed for the table but also as decorative elements, true graphic and sculptural objects.
The set consists of a ceramic leaf tray holding two cups and a sugar bowl with a lid, all adorned with stylized prickly pears. The palette blends deep greens, and delicately shaded pink and yellow tones, typical of Sicilian ceramic production from this period.
